What is down? What is feather?

Important information for the smart consumer about down and feather products

There are many kinds of insulating materials in the market, including cotton, synthetic fibers, wool, down, silk etc.  Down is derived from the waterfowl (geese and ducks).  This material shrinks, expands, absorbs and repels moisture, and is nature’s lightest insulating material.  With the increased concern with the energy crisis, down is a wonderful energy-conserving friend.

The waterfowl plumage consists of two main categories: down and feathers.

A down cluster looks like a dandelion pad. It has long flexible barbs growing from a central point.  One of its most valuable properties is its ability to trap air because of its three-dimensional structure.
